Research Projects

At the Neurovascular Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital, research is at the heart of what we do. Our team is actively involved in multiple studies focused on improving the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term outcomes of patients with brain aneurysms and other neurovascular disorders.

Through collaborations with international partners, we continue to explore new technologies, imaging techniques, and treatment approaches that advance the standard of care and expand access to minimally invasive therapies.

Our research includes both investigator-initiated projects and multicentre collaborations, ensuring that the latest scientific discoveries are rapidly translated into clinical practice for our patients.

Clinical trials

Our centre is recognized as a global leader in neurovascular clinical research and is one of the most active sites in Canada for brain aneurysm and other neurovascular trials. We are currently participating in several groundbreaking international studies, including:

  • PIONEER: Evaluating the safety and effectiveness of next-generation flow diversion technology for the treatment of complex brain aneurysms.

  • EVOLVE: Investigating the safety and effectiveness of a new flow diverter device designed specifically for small brain aneurysms.

  • STRIDE: Assessing a new minimally invasive endovascular option for the treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

  • DENTIA: Investigating how inflammatory biomarkers in saliva and blood relate to aneurysm tissue in patients with brain aneurysms.

  • B-SILENT: Evaluating the safety and clinical performance of a new stent designed specifically for treating pulse-synchronous tinnitus due to venous sinus stenosis.

  • INSYTE: Investigational study for a new optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging system that takes pictures from inside a blood vessel in your brain.

  • LUMENS-1: Evaluating the early safety and feasibility of a new aneurysm embolization system for treating unruptured brain aneurysms.

All of our physicians are trained and proctored experts in advanced endovascular techniques.

Dr. Vitor Mendes Pereira, Director of the Neurovascular Centre, serves as the Global Principal Investigator for several of these landmark trials, reflecting our centre’s leadership in shaping the future of aneurysm treatment.

Participate in our clinical trials

Patients treated at St. Michael’s Hospital may have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials offering access to innovative devices and therapies not yet widely available. Participation is always voluntary and follows a detailed discussion with your care team to ensure safety and understanding.

By taking part in a clinical trial, you contribute to research that helps improve care for future patients while receiving the most advanced treatment options available today.

If you are interested in learning more about our active trials or your eligibility, please speak with your treating physician or contact our research team for more information.

Currently, we are recruiting participants for our STRIDE clinical trial. You must have a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus to be eligible. Click on the button below to find out if you are eligible.
